DNCE BOP OF THE DAY. “Toothbrush”.
NEBRASKA. ACLU receives complaints that group homes are rejecting gay kids. “The American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska said in the letter sent Wednesday that it has recently fielded complaints from probation officers and legal representatives who have had children rejected for placement solely based on the child’s sexual orientation.”
CALIFORNIA. Sanders wants debate with Clinton: “More than half way through the month of May, we hope Secretary Clinton will soon make good on her campaign’s commitment and agree to a time and place for a debate,” Weaver added. “There are issues of enormous importance facing the people of California and our nation and the people of our largest state deserve to hear the Democratic candidates opinions.”
BILL CLINTON. Donald Trump accuses him of rape: “It already looks like the 2016 general election is going to take the concept of negative campaigning to new heights. During an interview with Sean Hannity Wednesday, Donald Trump brought up an unproven accusation of a nearly 40-year-old sexual assault against former president Bill Clinton. Trump’s comment came after Hannity accused The New York Times of bias in the wake of the paper’s story about Trump’s relationships with women from his past.”
PREDICTIONS. Nate Silver explains how FiveThirtyEight missed on their predictions about Donald Trump: “The big mistake is a curious one for a website that focuses on statistics. Unlike virtually every other forecast we publish at FiveThirtyEight — including the primary and caucus projections I just mentioned — our early estimates of Trump’s chances weren’t based on a statistical model. Instead, they were what we sometimes called ”subjective odds” — which is to say, educated guesses. In other words, we were basically acting like pundits, but attaching numbers to our estimates.3 And we succumbed to some of the same biases that pundits often suffer, such as not changing our minds quickly enough in the face of new evidence. Without a model as a fortification, we found ourselves rambling around the countryside like all the other pundit-barbarians, randomly setting fire to things.”
TEASER. Trekkies are going nuts over this teaser for the new Star Trek series, presented at CBS Upfronts.
ANIMALS IN CAPTIVITY. Walrus drowns tourist and trainer at China wildlife park: “A male tourist from Liaoning in Northeast China was visiting the Xixiajou Wildlife Park in the Shandong Province when he lost his footing and tumbled into the walrus pool, according to the Shanghai Daily, which did not provide a specific date of the incident. The animal’s longtime trainer jumped in the water to try to save the flailing visitor — but the massive pinniped wrapped its arms around both men and plunged the pair deep underwater.”
WHO NOSE ANYTHING. Scientists study origin of nose shapes: “Scientists scanned the genomes of around 6,000 individuals to unpick why some people have narrow, pointy noses, while others have broad bridges or wide nostrils. The upshot was the discovery of four genes which are involved in controlling the shape of our nasal apparatus, with another gene found to affect how much the chin juts out.” Can you identify this nose? Answer at bottom of the page.*
ACQUISITIONS. Bayer in talks to buy evil seed company Monsanto. “Bayer, which invented aspirin in the 19th century, said executives from both companies had met to “privately discuss a negotiated acquisition of Monsanto Company” to create a “leading integrated agriculture business”. Combining the companies’ operations would create a giant business making drugs such as Yasmin birth control pills, pesticides and seeds for genetically modified crops.”
BOB THE DRAG QUEEN. Drag Race winner claps back at haters: “There have been some very strong reactions to my win on Monday. I want to thank all of my supporters. You guys have lifted me up and I promise not to let you down. This is more than just a crown, it’s a legacy. With great drag comes comes great responsibility. In regards to the negativity that I have received, just remember HATERS GONE HATE. It’s in their nature, they don’t know any better and they can’t help themselves. They really seem to love doing it and I don’t want to take that joy away from them. I must say though I didn’t expect to see it from an actual RuPaul’s Drag Race alumni. So RAVEN I know you HATE my purse, but I can think of about 100,000 reasons my purse is better than yours.
RELIGION. Methodists pauses gay debate: “Delegates voted 428 to 405 to accept a recommendation by the Council of Bishops to put off debates on sexuality at this conference and to set up a commission to examine and possibly recommend revisions of every paragraph in the Book of Discipline related to human sexuality, according to United Methodist News Service.”
FROM ABOVE. New mosaic of Africa without a single cloud: “Using almost 7000 images captured by the Sentinel-2A satellite, this mosaic offers a cloud-free view of the African continent – about 20% of the total land area in the world. The majority of these separate images were taken between December 2015 and April 2016, totalling 32 TB of data. Thanks to Sentinel-2A’s 290 km-wide swath and 10-day revisit at the equator, the chance of imaging Earth’s surface when the skies are clear is relatively high. Nevertheless, being able to capture the Tropics cloud-free over the five months is remarkable.”
KANYE WEST. Saving the world one rant at a time:
